2011 Diocesan Assembly: Endicott, New York

The annual assembly of the Diocese of New York and New Jersey was held on Tuesday, July 19 at Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Endicott, New York.  Representing our parish was the Board of Trustees’ President, Nick Kovalycsik.  Observers were Trustees Peggy Kovalycsik, and Robert and Elizabeth Czech.  Divine Liturgy started at 9:00 a.m. with the tonsuring of a young man as reader.  During the Liturgy, an ordination took place and was agreed to by the shouts of Axios throughout the church.   A delicious lunch was then served .  The meeting was called to order following the luncheon.

Many topics concerning our diocese were brought up, however the main issue brought up by the New York State Deanery was to promote a resolution at the upcoming 16th All-American Council concerning Central Church Administration Assessments (Fair Share) Reduction.   The resolution stated that the CCA (Central Church Administration) reported an operating surplus of over $450,000.00 for the year 2010.  Keeping this in mind, the deanery’s resolution would change the fair share assessment for each of the participating dioceses at an amount of $50.00 per capita of the census of the participating dioceses, as determined each preceding year (2011, 2012, 2013) for the next triennium (2012, 2013, 2014).  The amount at present is $105.  An impassioned plea was heard that the diocese is soon to be insolvent.  The money needs to be used on a parish and mission level to grow the church.  Following the debate concerning this resolution, a vote was taken and passed.  Our delegate agreed with the resolution.

It was a lovely day and participants left with a feeling of good fellowship and accomplishment.  For more information and picturesof the event, go to nynjoca.org.
