The Lenten Period of Prayer and Fasting has Arrived........

February 19th First day Lent: Today we begin our journey to Pascha. Yesterday, Forgiveness Sunday (Cheese Fare Sunday), we here at St. John’s gathered together to attend Vespers and heard the Great Prokimenon: “Turn not away Thy face from Thy servant for I am afflicted. Hear me speedily, attend to my soul and deliver it.” At the end of the service we asked forgiveness from one another and the Church began her pilgrimage to the joyful and glorious day of Pascha. Pictures are in the Photo Gallery.

Jesus directs each of us to pray for the Father’s forgiveness of all, and for all of us to forgive each other. “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (Matt 6:12). Jesus insists on mutual forgiveness between people as a precondition of God’s forgiveness. Those who do not forgive are not forgiven. This teaching is repeated by Jesus in the parable of the unforgiving servant (Matt. 18:23-35), which ends with the same words.
