Mother's Day at St. John's......

Mother’s Day has always been a revered holiday.  Growing up in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s it was almost a certainty that somewhere in school or, if you were fortunate enough to own one, on TV or radio you would come across the haunting refrain of the little song “Mother.”    “M is for the million things she gave me;  O means only that she’s growing old;  T is for the tears she shed to save me;  H is for her heart of purest gold;  E is for her eyes with love-light shining; R means right and right she’ll always be;    Put them all together they spell mother, a word that means the world to me.”

With warm memories, it is with a tear that we remember all the wonderful mothers of the past who worked so diligently and tirelessly for the benefit of St. John’s church at auctions, bread sales, pirogi sales, picnics and the list goes on and on.  It was known that all these women loved the church and it showed in their devotion and piety.  We remember them all, O Lord and we pray:   “Do Thou O Lord, give rest to the souls of Thy departed servants in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sorrow and sighing have fled away.”  Memory Eternal!

Today our numbers may be smaller but our love for the church continues.  It is with great admiration for all those mothers who attend St. John’s continuously, carry on the banner in the various clubs they belong to, who sing beautifully and with great feeling in the choir, who help when they are needed without being asked, that we all pray for and ask God:

“O Lord Jesus Christ our God, who in Thy mercy and loving-kindness doest regard the prayers of all who call upon Thee with their whole heart, incline Thine ear and hear my prayer, now humbly offered unto Thee:  Be mindful O Lord, of all our mothers and grant them mercy, life, peace, health, salvation and visitation, and pardon and remission of sins; that they may evermore praise and glorify Thy holy Name.  May God grant them all Many Years!”

Divine Liturgy - 9:00 a.m. - Palm Sunday - Blessing of Palms and Willows

In the life of Jesus, the solemn entrance in the Holy City was the only visible triumph. Up to this day, He consistently rejected all attempts to glorify Him. But six days before the Passover, He not only accepted to be glorified, He Himself provoked and arranged this glorification. He made it...
