Important Holy Days in August.........

The month of August hosts many special Holy Days: The Transfiguration on August 6; Venerable Herman of Alaska, Wonderworker of all America on August 9; and St. Tikhon Wonderworker of Zadonsk on August 13. Another very special Holy Day in August is the Dormition of the Most-Holy Theotokos on August 15. Also, the Beheading of St. John the Baptist on August 29 which is a strict fast day. Please refer to the calendar for church services.

On August 6, we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. It is viewed as one of the 12 Major Feasts of the Holy Orthodox Church. Christ’s Transfiguration occurred as His public ministry was drawing to a close. Soon before entering Jerusalem for the final time, our Lord went to the top of Mt. Tabor to pray, taking with him the Apostles Peter, James and John. Scriptural accounts tell us that Christ’s face “shone like the sun,” and His garments became “white as snow.” Appearing with Him were Moses and Elijah. God’s awesome voice reminded them that “This is My Beloved Son in Whom I am well-pleased. Hear Him.” The Apostles then found themselves alone with their Master once again. The mysterious manifestation had ended. The Transfiguration serves to show, without a shadow of a doubt, the Divinity of Jesus Christ. The connection of “light” with our Lord reminds us that it is only through Him that we can find salvation, for He is the One Who illumines our paths, being an “Everlasting Light” for all those who believe in Him. . Following this service, Fr. Maryan will bless fruit brought to church by the attendees. Please do not include bananas.

The following is an excerpt: “Today the Holy Church solemnly glorifies the honorable Dormition or translation of the Mother of God from earth to heaven. A wonderful translation – she died without serious illness, peacefully. Her soul is taken up in the divine hands of Her Son and carried up into the heavenly abode, accompanied by the sweet singing of angels. And then, her most pure body is transferred by the apostles to Gethsemane where it is honorably buried, and on the third day, it is resurrected and taken up to heaven. You see this on the icon of the Dormition of the Theotokos. On it is represented the life-bearing body of the Theotokos laying on a bier, surrounded by the apostles and hierarchs, and in the center of the icon the Lord holding in His hands the most pure soul of the Theotokos. The translation of the Mother of God is a paradigm of the translation in general of the souls of Christians to the other world. Herbs and flowers will be blessed by Fr. Maryan following this important service.

The life of John the Baptist was one of sacrifice and penance. He preached a baptism of repentance, proclaiming the presence of the Savior to a people who had long awaited His coming. It can also be said that his blessed life was crowned by his noble death - his beheading was a direct result of his fearless condemnation of Herod’s sinful, scandalous behavior. John’s untimely demise was precipitated by his staunch defense of what was right and moral. He suffered for defending the truth. On this holy day, we are reminded that we are obligated to do likewise. Christ’s laws and the teachings of His Church are never to be compromised. Morality and truth are unchanging: what is right today will be right forever! As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called upon to speak out against those who make a mockery of the precepts that govern our lives.
