Father Sophrony and thirty-five parishioners and friends from St. John’s went on a bus trip to Hunterdon Hills on October 14 to enjoy a delicious dinner and a show.  The trip followed Divine Liturgy in the morning and our coffee hour.  Everyone enjoyed the play called “Everybody Loves Opal,” and after the third act ended and the cast came on stage, it was clear that everyone had a good time.

The show was originally produced on Broadway by Roger L. Stevens at the Longacre Theatre in New York City.    The story is about Opal Kronkie, a middle-aged recluse who lives at the edge of a municipal dump and collects any form of junk that can be toted in her little wagon to her ramshackle home.  Three zany con artists on the lam discover her disastrous establishment and decide that it would make the perfect hideout.  Throughout a series of botched events by the con artists, Opal radiates her trademark optimism, affection and gratitude.  The cheerful philosophy exhibited by this play left us all smiling as we left.
