Happy New Year....

January 1 was the feast of the Circumcision of Christ, and the commemoration of St. Basil, the Great.  It was also the civil New Year and here at St. John's Father Igor distributed slices of Vasilopita, the Greek New Year's cake.  Every year on New Year's Day families cut the Vasilopita to bless the house and bring good luck for the new year.  It is traditional to bake a coin into the Vasilopita (St. Basil's cake).  The one who receives the coin is considered to be especially blessed for the year.  A piece of cake is sliced for each member of the family and any visitors present at the time.  O course we were all blessed to be at Liturgy this morning but our lucky recipient of the coin in the bread and of a special blessing was Peggy Kovalycsik.  Many years to Peggy and to all our parishioners and friends.  Pictures are in the Photo Gallery.
